The distribution of patent and royalty income is governed by University Policy (see section IV – Division of Intellectual Property Income). For the share that is distributed to the School of Medicine, 40% is distributed to the laboratory of the inventor, 40% to the inventor’s department and 20% to the School. If the inventor leaves the employment of the University, or if the inventor ceases to maintain significant research activity (e.g., ceases to be a principal investigator on extramurally funded research), then the share that would have gone to the inventor’s lab reverts to the School and is used at the discretion of the Dean.
